RM of Milton’s story
The Rural Municipality of Milton No. 292 sits in west-central Saskatchewan, right up against the Alberta boundary. Its story as an organized community begins in 1905, when the area was set up as the Wirral Improvement District. On December 11, 1911, it was incorporated as a rural municipality.
The name Milton probably came from Milton, Ontario, which in turn was named after the English poet John Milton. The surname itself means "mill town."
Today the municipality surrounds the village of Marengo, where the RM office is found. Within its boundaries are also the special service area of Alsask and the locality of Merid. Rail lines of the C.N.R. serve several of these places, including Marengo, Merid and Alsask, and Highways 7 and 44 run through Alsask.
